Service Dog Training

Defined by in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is trained to perform tasks to mitigate a handler’s disability. There can be a long wait, as much as two years, to get a fully trained service dog from a program and can cost $8,000 or more. Owners can train their own service dog; however, they often need assistance from a trainer familiar with service dog training. I am a certified Service Dog Coach who helps owners work with their dogs with specific tasks or comprehensive program training from start to finish.

Puppy Training

The first 3 months are the most important period of learning for puppies. This is the time to prevent lifelong problems such as reactions to strangers, noises, children, separation anxiety and other undesirable behaviors. This is also the time to teach you and your puppy “fun” and valuable skills such as basic obedience and safe play with positive training. I train to the objectives of the AKC STAR Puppy.

Family Dog Training

No dog is “too old to learn new tricks.” I train to the objectives of the AKC Canine Good Citizen for socialization, behavior, and basic obedience along with your specific family needs and circumstances. I focus on the family and work to teach you to be the primary trainer for you dog.

Elaine Chevalier of Able Dog is a certified Service Dog Coach (SDC) and a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) who works with people to train their own pet dog to assist them as a service dog if the dog has the appropriate temperament and behavior for this type of work and the owner is dedicated to the effort. She is a volunteer trainer for Veterinarians to Veterans United and has attended numerous workshops and seminars for psychiatric service dogs.

She is also passionate about puppy training that leads to lifelong happiness for both owners and dogs. She uses AKC training guidelines and the ethical principles of positive training for all her family dog training clients.
